TIES Closing session: Dr. Gary Prest-What it Takes

Former superintendent of Bloomington School District Dr. Gary Prest presented on a new STEM initiative:
  • Students (Knowing every student)
  • Team teaching (Collaboration, PLC's, shared planning time, Communities of Practice)
  • Equiped and Ethical (Teacher credentials and experiences indicates our staff are well prepared, teaching is a public activity and character is under moment by moment review-a formal code of ethics)
  • Motivated (Teaching is intensely personal, staff show their motivation everyday)

Teachers are present for all of the firsts in students lives, the aha moments, the struggles, etc. It is a privaledge!

Michael, you've been a monster of productivity. Thanks for posting session summaries. I know your audience here is primarily Edina teachers, but it's helpful to catch up on what I missed. Also great to be able to link in via your Technorati tags and see the unconference format in action.

Redefining Awesome...Connected Learning

Last September, Will Richardson challenged our faculty to " Redefine Awesome " in what learning looked like in our district. The last few weeks, have seen some great connected learning opportunities happening at Valley View Middle School that get at what Will was talking about.  Project Lead the Way Tim Berendt, a teacher in our Project Lead the Way program, began using Twitter this year as a way for his students to share the work they are doing with the outside world, and also as a tool for formative assessment.  Students tweet out what they hope to accomplish at the beginning of the class period, and then tweet what they completed at the end.
