My nominee for the 2008 Edublog Awards for Best Resource Sharing Blog goes to Jackie Roehl's Edina National Urban Alliance Program Blog.

For those unfamiliar with the National Urban Alliance (NUA), they are an organization whose mission is:

to substantiate in the public schools of urban America an irrefutable belief in the capacity of all children to reach the highest levels of learning & thinking demanded by our ever-changing global community.


Through the use of Thinking Maps, teachers and students use specific strategies to give meaning to their learning. Developed by David Hyerle, Thinking Maps identify the 8 ways to visually represent information. Jackie has done an exceptional job on her blog offering resources and insights into incorporating NUA strategies into curriculum from a variety of disciplines. She is very deserving of this award!

Jackie's blog is a great resource for Culturally Responsive Teaching strategies. Beyond Thinking Maps, Jackie describes how she and her colleagues have developed several strategies to fully engage all students in higher level thinking. The strategies are simple to use, have a strong visual component, and keep kids moving and thinking. Her blog includes a Topics List so the reader can easily find all entries related to a particulur strategy. After reading this blog you can improve your teaching the next time you are with your students!

Redefining Awesome...Connected Learning

Last September, Will Richardson challenged our faculty to " Redefine Awesome " in what learning looked like in our district. The last few weeks, have seen some great connected learning opportunities happening at Valley View Middle School that get at what Will was talking about.  Project Lead the Way Tim Berendt, a teacher in our Project Lead the Way program, began using Twitter this year as a way for his students to share the work they are doing with the outside world, and also as a tool for formative assessment.  Students tweet out what they hope to accomplish at the beginning of the class period, and then tweet what they completed at the end. In many cases, students have received feedback and encouragement from people outside the district, such as this exchange from Autodesk, the company that makes the software the students use!  Berndt did a great job at the start reminding students to follow our Web 2.0 Code of Ethics , and how they could use hashtags to label thei
